Magnet wire, also called winding wire, is most frequently copper wire coated with a very thin layer of insulation. It is used in the construction of transformers, inductors, motors, generators, speakers, hard disk head actuators, electromagnets, and other applications requiring tight coils of insulated wire. The conductor is most often fully annealed, electrolytically refined copper; aluminum magnet wire is used for large transformers and motors. Despite the historical use of the word "enamel," the insulation is typically a tough polymer film rather than an enamel.
